"Plaza Comunitaria"
A New Learning Program Available at GCI's Salud Center

By Tania Casas, Marketing

Alma Alcantara from the Mexican Consulate, Cris Medina, GCI's Executive Director and Gilbert Guerrero, GCI's Associate Director of Education sign an agreement to provide assistance to Mexican nationals in the Kansas City area.

Plaza Comunitaria” is a new learning program offered by the Mexican Government. Is not only available all around Mexico but also in different states of the United States. This program now being offered at GCI’s Salud Center (2641 Belleview, KCMO) is available for our immigrant community who wishes to have a better education for better opportunities. “Plaza Comunitaria” is addressed for people interested in: having more education for their life and work, improving Spanish as their native language, learning English the easiest way, supporting their children’s education with the example, improving their self-esteem, and pride for their culture.

On June 26, 2006 a group of representatives from different organizations in the KC area such as the KCKS/KCMO School District, Mexican Consulate, Mattie Rhodes, etc. came together to GCI’s main building for a three day seminar. The purpose was to inform these representatives about “Plaza Comunitaria”, and how they can help and get involved.

GCI started this relationship with the Mexican Government a year ago when some of our staff traveled to Mexico to find out more about this project with hope of bringing it to Kansas City for the betterment of our immigrant community.
Some of the services include: Basic Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), Computer skills learning and Accreditation and Certification.
