Alta Vista Charter High School

In 1989, GCI initiated discussions with the De La Salle Education Center in response to high dropout rates in the community. (The dropout rate among Hispanics exceeds that of other major minority populations in Kansas City and nationwide.) De La Salle was more than willing to serve Hispanic students, but few were willing to go to their site. Escalera College Bridge

The Escalera College Bridge Program is administered by Guadalupe Centers, Inc., a non-profit community based organization. Escalera is an opportunity for high school juniors to learn about the options available for their future. The program is intensive, meeting for an hour and a half on average three days per week and lasting fifteen months. Located in the state-of-the-art Francis Institute on the MCC Penn Valley campus, the Guadalupe Center’s Plaza de Niños (PDN) is committed to preparing children for kindergarten and beyond. PDN believes that young children learn best by doing, which requires active thinking and experimentation.
